Setting Up my Social Media

Today I made a Facebook and Twitter accounts, tweaked the site, created a couple coupons and made a Google store. I embedded the Google store into my Facebook fan landing page, and enticed users to "like" the page for a 20% discount:

I also added some basic plug-ins for my site, like Yoast SEO and Google XML sitemaps. I'm sure I'll add others in the future, right now I am focused on generating fresh content for Google to index that is somewhat related to the hats I am selling.

For shipping I am using the medium flat rate boxes from the USPS. This is how flat rate shipping works; you put something in a box (up to 70 pounds), pay one flat fee and send it anywhere in the US or $10.95.

(It's a better deal than commercial bulk shipping, which requires  $370 in permit fees and a minimim 50 piece shipment per order. Shipping 3 pounds is about $6.50 which is almost half the cost of flat rate boxes. But I don't have the volume fot that just yet.)

Anyways, on the USPS website, you can sign up for an account, (takes minutes) and order up to 500 boxes to your door in 7-10 business days. I was impressed at the efficiency, after trying to deal with the people who work at the post office a few hours before. I ordered 50, which should be enough for the first shipment. The website is about 90% where I want it to be design-wise. I still need to set up a Google Merchant account and a Paypal account as well.

The next week will be focused on SEO. I need to build some quality backlinks if I am going to get to the top of Google.

PS; So what if it's a Saturday night and I'm at home writing a blog I've told no one about? It's not that bad is it?

I'll check back in soon.

Site Design

I installed the "Store" theme from Templatic. I updated the inventory and made a shrewd logo and coupon.
I am offering free shipping for orders over $55, which requires 4 hats to be purchased.

$18 per hat x 4 orders =   $72 gross revenue
Material Cost for 4 hats  - $28
3% Paypal fee                - $1.50
Shipping:                        - $10.50

Total Net Profit : $32 or 44% profit margin. Pretty damn good right?

The profits won't be as nice if customers order only one hat:

$18 hat + $7.00 Shipping = $25 gross revenue
Shipping:                             -$10.50
Paypal 3% Fee                    -$0.75
Material Cost:                      -$7.00

Total Net Profit: $6.75, or a 27% profit margin. A little better than McDonalds operating margin, but I am not factoring in the gas, packaging labor, printing cost and all the other sweat equity that comes with running a business like this.

While I'm waiting for my hats to arrive, I should set up my site with all the Wordpress plugins and get started on creating backlinks for the site. It's going to be a lot of work to get this website to the top of Google, but I'm ready for it.

I'll check back soon. BTW if anyone is reading this, tell me what you think of the homepage (besides the fact it has no pictures :)

R&D

I did some research to find the most popular teams in both the NFL and NBA. I made an Google Doc spreadsheet and recorded two metrics:

1. items for sale on eBay (To see how big the market is)

2. Facebook fans (To measure social presence for FB ads)

I then created a chart that mapped out my results.

Red = A lot of Facebook fans Size = Amount of items on eBay

I am going to analyze this chart a bit little more before I make my first order. I;m afraid that if there is an NBA lockout, it will be hard to sell hats. But I have a feeling the season will come back as scheduled.

UPDATE: I just ordered some hats, they should be arriving in 2 weeks, so now I have to focus on designing the website!

SnapbackJack.com is born

Snapback Jack Plan of Attack

It's 2:54 PM. 27 hours after I received $3,048 dollars in grants and scholarships to go to school. I should be using this money to pay for rent, ($600/month) my credit card debt ($1000) or actually buy the books my teachers tells me to ($100's).

Fuck that. I'm starting a website this weekend. I'm selling snapback hats, like the one N.W.A used to wear. The plan of attack is this:

1. Register Domain
2. Buy Product
3. Design Site
4. SEO
5. Buy Facebook Ads, Google Adwords
6. Create videos with hot chicks wearing hats

I need this site to get to the first page of Google to increase my profits. If I can get to the top spot in my keyword, I won't have to pay Google $1 per click. I will have to keep a blog on my site to create organic traffic. But first, I have to register the domain.
